According to Belarusian state media outlets, telephone contact between the two leaders was initiated by the French side
French President Emmanuel Macron warned Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko of the risks of possible Belarusian involvement in the war in Ukraine, during a rare telephone conversation between the two leaders, held on Sunday.
According to a source close to Macron cited by the France-Presse agency, the French head of state warned Lukashenko of the consequences of allowing the country to be drawn into the conflict alongside Russia.
“Macron underlined the risks for Belarus if it gets involved in Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine,” the same source said.
According to Belarusian state media outlets, telephone contact was initiated by the French side. The last phone call between Macron and Lukashenko took place on February 26, 2022, just two days after the start of the Russian invasion.
Macron has defended the need for direct dialogue between Europe and Russia on the war in Ukraine, including contacts with Vladimir Putin. In December 2025, the French president revealed that technical work was underway to prepare the ground for future talks.
During the call, the French president also appealed to Lukashenko to adopt measures capable of improving relations between Minsk and Europe.
The contact comes at a time of growing speculation about Belarus’ eventual formal entry into the conflict, in support of Moscow.
Last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned of the possibility that Russia was preparing a new offensive against northern Ukraine with Belarusian support.
