The president of , , has started preventive radiation treatment after the removal of a skin tumor, according to a medical release from the doctors attending the 80-year-old left-wing leader.
“After the removal of a basal cell lesion on April 24, it was decided to continue adjunctive treatment with preventive, superficial radiation therapy to the scalp,” the doctors said, clarifying that Lula will continue his normal daily activities without restrictions. According to reports, he will have a total of 15 rounds of radiation.
Lula faces the polls
Lula is expected to seek a fourth, non-consecutive term as president in October elections and is currently leading his right-wing rival Flavio Bolsonaro in several polls ahead of a possible runoff.
He is the oldest sitting president in Brazil’s history and has faced several health setbacks in recent years, including emergency surgery in 2024 to treat and prevent bleeding in the head. Lula was also treated for throat cancer in 2011.
