The lawyer of former president José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has requested to postpone his court appearance, which was scheduled for June 2, as EL PAÍS has learned from legal sources. The National Court is investigating the former president for a crime of influence peddling and other crimes in the Plus Ultra case. In addition, Police Justice (Jupol, the majority union among agents) has requested the dismissal of Commissioner Jesús María Gómez Martín as superior chief in the Canary Islands after it has emerged that he is cited in an order for his alleged contacts with the Plus Ultra case. In the part of the case known so far, there is no evidence that this police commander – who was the top police officer at the Barajas airport on the night of January 20, 2020, when the controversial stopover in Madrid of the then Venezuelan vice president Delcy Rodríguez took place – is formally under investigation. Sources from the Ministry of the Interior emphasize this fact and rule out taking measures for now.
