There are retirees who can receive a cash benefit once a year, but support is not given to everyone. It is called Special Pension Supplement and is aimed at ex-combatants who receive certain benefits, such as rural pension, social pension or Social Benefit for Inclusion.
According to , which cites information from Social Security, this benefit is paid annually and depends on the length of military service performed in difficult or dangerous conditions. The value varies from case to case and is the result of a formula that takes into account the years of certified service.
Who is entitled to receive it?
The Special Pension Supplement is aimed at ex-combatants who meet specific conditions. According to Social Security, it is a “benefit paid in cash, once a year, to ex-combatants who receive rural retirement, social pension or Social Benefit for Inclusion”.
To be eligible, you must receive the Social Security Old-Age Pension, a pension from the special regime for agricultural activities or the transitional rural regime. In addition, the former combatant must request certification of the period of military service provided under conditions of difficulty or danger. This certification is communicated by email by the Ministry of National Defense, according to the information released.
The value is not the same for everyone
The value of the supplement depends on the number of years of recognized military service. Social Security explains that “the special supplement depends on the years of military service and the years of service provided in conditions of difficulty or danger”. In other words, the longer the certified time, the greater the amount to be received. The calculation is based on a percentage applied to the value of the social pension. This percentage has undergone recent changes, impacting the amount paid to beneficiaries.
What changes in 2026?
Social Security indicates that the amendment to article 6 of Law No. 9/2002, introduced by article 248 of Law No. 73-A/2025, increased the percentage for each year of military service from 7% to 10.5%. This difference corresponds to an increase of 3.5 percentage points per year of service. However, the increase is not applied all at once.
According to article 259 of Law nº 73-A/2025, half of the increase is paid in 2026 and the other half in 2027.
What does the bill look like this year?
In 2026, only half of the increase will apply. In practice, half of the increase of 3.5 percentage points is added to the previous 7%, that is, 1.75 percentage points. Thus, in 2026, the applied rate becomes 8.75%. According to the Social Security explanation, the formula for 2026 is this: social security value for 2026, set at R$262.40, multiplied by 8.75% and the number of years of military service.
In 2027, the rate rises again
Next year, the full rate should start to be applied. From 2027 onwards, the calculation will be based on the value of that year’s social pension, multiplied by 10.5% and the number of years of certified military service.
This means that, for the same number of years of service, the value may increase in relation to 2026, also depending on the value of social security that comes into force.
Not for all former combatants
Despite being linked to the status of ex-combatant, this complement is not universal. The benefit is intended for former combatants who receive rural retirement, social pension or Social Benefit for Inclusion and who have certified military service in difficult or dangerous conditions.
Therefore, anyone who was a former combatant, but receives another type of pension or does not meet the requirements, may not be entitled to this specific supplement.
What should those who think they have the right to do?
The first step is to confirm the benefit you receive and check whether you are covered by the scheme. Afterwards, you must certify the length of military service provided under conditions of difficulty or danger, with the competent bodies. Only with this certification is it possible to determine the number of years to be considered in the calculation.
In case of doubt, the beneficiary must consult Social Security or the Ministry of National Defense’s own channels, to confirm whether it meets the conditions and which procedure is applicable.
The Special Pension Supplement gains special relevance in 2026 because of the change in the percentage used in the calculation. Although the increase will only be completed in 2027, this year there is already an intermediate rate of 8.75%. For covered ex-combatants, this could mean a higher annual payment than they would have received at the previous rate.
In the end, the essential rule is this: retirees who are former combatants and receive certain benefits may be entitled to this money once a year. The amount depends on the years of certified military service and the rate applied each year.
