Amid accusations about relations with an investigated banker and film financing, PL pre-candidate seeks rapprochement with American president with a damaged image in Brazil
Flávio Bolsonaro’s possible visit to Donald Trump should have no or negative effect on the prospects of the PL pre-candidate, according to an assessment by ambassador Paulo Roberto de Almeida, academic advisor to Livres. Almeida is categorical about the trip: “No political weight, or if there is any, it will be totally negative”
The timing of the trip is considered unfavorable, as Flávio faces increasing stress after reports from the Intercept that associate him with banker Daniel Vorcaro, investigated for fraud in the financial market, and raise doubts about the financing of the film “Dark Horse”.
For the diplomat, the rapprochement with Trump reinforces an image of submission to a foreign leader who has already led episodes of direct conflict with Brazil, including the imposition of tariffs on the country in July 2025 and the application of the Magnitsky Law in a case that, according to the diplomat, does not fall within the scope of American legislation.
“Trump’s image in Brazil is the most negative possible, with the exception, possibly, of the more radical Bolsonarist camp,” stated Almeida.
Lula has already met Trump three times
The effect of demonstrating prestige that Flávio apparently seeks is undermined by the fact that President Lula has already met with Trump on three occasions, including public praise from the American. “Trump focuses solely on his personal interests, those of his family and those of the USA. What can Flávio Bolsonaro gain from a leader despised in Brazil? Apparently very little”, assesses the diplomat.
Regarding the internal impact on the right, Almeida is equally skeptical: a possible gesture of sympathy from Trump to Flávio “will add practically nothing outside the already conquered bubble of followers of Bolsonarism”.
