Court authorizes end of cash payments on Rio buses

Measure will come into effect from May 30th

The city of Rio de Janeiro does not will accept payment in cash on buses in the capital. The measure was recognized by the 2nd Public Finance Court this Tuesday (26), following action by Rio’s Procon attempt to invalidate the decision regarding transport. Tailor-made comes into effect from May 30th for municipal buses.

Judge Georgia Vasconcellos considered that the “change sought by the defendant in the method of paying for tickets in no way affects the quality of the transport service provided, in such a way as to make it inadequate or inefficient.”

She also recalled that the BRT and VLT already operate in this system, which, according to her, brings speed and convenience to users of these means of transport.

The mayor of Rio, Eduardo Cavaliere, advocated changestating that charging only by digital means is safer and brings more “transparencymore control and more efficiency in the service, in addition to contributing to the reduction of property crimes”.
