PSDB and Cidadania approve launching Aécio to Planalto; tucano still reviews

Federation tries to present its name as an alternative to polarization in the elections in 2026

The federal deputy (PSDB-MG) received this Tuesday (May 26, 2026) the unanimous support of the PSDB Citizenship Federation to be a pre-candidate for the Presidency in 2026. The announcement was made 1 day after the PSDB of São Paulo officially supported the congressman for the presidential race.

Aécio, however, has not yet accepted the invitation. He said he will analyze the reaction of sectors of the economy to the initiative. “I am honored by this demonstration, it is certainly already part of my history”these.

The federation’s idea is to formalize Aécio’s pre-candidacy this week. The group tries to present the toucan as an alternative to the polarization of (PT)
e (PL).

“The time is now for conversation, politics is above all talking, listening so that we can understand if there is officially space for the construction of this path”said Aécio. The deputy said he does not like to talk about “3rd way”because he only believes in one path that leads to the future. “Who knows, we can build this path of transformation”he added.

RETURN ATTEMPT

The move marks the PSDB’s attempt to launch its own candidate for Planalto, after the party was left out of the running in the 2022 elections. The PSDB lost space in the main electoral colleges and saw the hegemony built in São Paulo collapse, a state it governed for almost 3 consecutive decades.

In 2024, the party suffered a municipal setback: it did not elect mayors in capitals and was left without representation in the São Paulo City Council.

In the state of São Paulo, the political birthplace of the party, the flight of leaders to Gilberto Kassab’s PSD reduced the Tucana benches. In February 2026, 6 state deputies from PSDB and 1 from Cidadania migrated to the PSD, reducing the federation’s presence in Alesp (Legislative Assembly of São Paulo).

This Tuesday (May 26), Roberto Freire, honorary president of the federation, said that Brazil “it needs to get back to dealing with growth, employment, health, education, public safety and State efficiency”.
