He Pope Leo XIV has denounced in the last hours the use of artificial intelligence in armed conflictscon Lebanon as an explicit example, and has expressed his support for the flotilla activists intercepted by Israel, in statements that come shortly after presenting his first encyclical last Monday and a few hours after meeting with the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez.
“We have seen cases today in Lebanon and other places in the world where War is waged with artificial intelligence, without thinking about human liveswho are true victims of all this,” said the Pontiff, who has renewed his “invitation to peace.”
With this, León has also revealed that this week the Vatican has already held meetings with experts from the American company Anthropic through the Dicastery of Integral Human Development. The objective, he explained, is “search for unarmed artificial intelligence”an expression that literally takes up one of the central concepts of his first encyclical, ‘Magnifica Humanitatis’, presented on Monday, in which he called for “disarming” AI and removing it from the logic of war industries.
with the flotilla
Asked directly by flotilla activists—several of them photographed handcuffed and tied after the Israeli intervention—the Pope has not evaded the response. “Unfortunately the Gaza people still do not receive humanitarian aid“, he said, adding: “This is causing protests and difficulties, and also the initiatives of those participating in the flotilla.”
In this framework, León has asked “all authorities” to assist and accompany the population of Gaza and to begins to rebuild. “The real people are still suffering a lot,” the Pope stressed in statements from his residence in Castel Gandolfo.
Hate and violence
The Pontiff has avoided charge directly against Israelbut the framework of his response left little room for ambiguity. “We are provoking more and more hatred, violence from all sides, it doesn’t help“, he said, before demanding once again a return to dialogue. “The message has to be negotiate again and try to resolve problems with dialogue“, he concluded.
The Pope’s statements come at a new moment of diplomatic tension around the flotilla. Last week Spain and Italy called for sanctions against the Israeli minister Itamar Ben Gvir for him humiliating treatment to the European activists interceptedand they have repeatedly denounced Israel’s behavior, as Sánchez said again on Tuesday at the FAO before an audience that responded with a long ovation.
