Amid renewed public scrutiny over his age and physical stamina, United States President Donald Trump underwent a more than three-hour medical examination at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Tuesday. This is the Republican’s fourth health checkup that has been made public since he returned to the White House for his second term in January of last year (yes, only since then).
Through a message on his social networks, after concluding the visit and knowing the results, the president – who will turn 80 on June 14 – was very optimistic. “I just finished my 6 month physical at Walter Reed Military Medical Center. Everything went PERFECTLY.”
According to the White House, the stay at the Bethesda (Maryland) hospital complex is part of routine preventive medical and dental examinations. However, the frequency of these reviews and the advanced age of the president – who already holds the record of being the oldest president to take office in US history – keep the debate about his health at the forefront, especially in the face of the upcoming midterm elections, legislative elections that will measure his political strength next fall.
Although his cabinet did not immediately release a detailed written medical report, health experts note that a complete evaluation for a patient Trump’s age typically includes advanced cardiac testing, common cancer screenings, blood pressure measurements and cognitive testing.
The transparency and age debate
Unlike other federal employees, there is no law that requires US presidents to undergo regular medical examinations or to publicly disclose their health records, leaving the final decision and the degree of transparency at the discretion of the president himself and his team.
However, the discussion about presidential acuity and health has gained historic weight in the country and that multiplies the voices that ask for true clarity. Above all, after the obvious decline that former President Joe Biden faced at the time, which even led the Democrat to withdraw from the electoral race in 2024. A debate that entails another one: that of the generational change in the country’s politics, full of veterans.
Medical and bioethical experts remind in media such as AP and PBS that scrutiny is inevitable. Recently, a group of mental health and neurology professionals publicly expressed concern about the Republican’s behavior, while critics point to times when the president has seemed lethargic in public meetings.
For their part, Trump and his entourage have categorically rejected any questioning, insisting that he enjoys the same energy as he did five decades ago, despite his well-known fast food eating habits and his minimal attachment to physical exercise.
The revealed
Throughout his current administration, different updates have been reported about the president’s physical condition. Last July it was revealed that he suffers from chronic venous insufficiency, a common condition in older adults that causes mild swelling in his feet and calves.
In addition, last October he underwent a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that his family doctor, Navy Captain Sean Barbabella, summarized in a report stating that the president was in “exceptional health” and highlighting that the electrocardiograms showed a “heart age” approximately 14 years younger than his chronological age.
With this new exam on the verge of entering his ninth decade of life, Trump seeks to dispel the doubts of his detractors and project an image of vigor and total capacity to continue leading the nation.
