Harald also expressed concern for 52-year-old Mette-Marit, who suffers from an incurable lung disease and whose condition has recently worsened. as her husband Crown Prince Haakon announced on Tuesday. In 2018, the princess was diagnosed with a rare form of pulmonary fibrosis, which causes her breathing difficulties and repeatedly forces her to limit her duties. Recently, she appeared in public with oxygen support.
The Royal Palace announced in December 2025 that the Princess might need a lung transplant in the future due to her health condition. Haakon said on Tuesday that his wife’s condition had noticeably worsened recently and he expressed concern for her.
Mette-Marit has been the wife of the heir to the throne since 2001. In recent months, she has also found herself in the spotlight for her previous contacts with American sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as well as for the legal problems of her son Marius Borg Höiby, who is accused of rape. The verdict in this case is expected on June 15.
