Brit Cunningham made thousands rethink their shopping habits when she highlighted a worrying problem in supermarkets. While shopping for groceries, something started to bother her and the more she thought about it, the worse it seemed to her, she writes.
The young woman explained that she picked out vegetables and other groceries while shopping before heading to the butcher’s department to buy chicken. “The way they sell it here is that the meat is on a plastic tray and wrapped in foil, through which a little sticky liquid from the raw meat oozes,” explained.
However, the problem was not only the unpleasant feeling itself. She began to worry that customers with chicken juice on their hands will handle fruits and vegetables, and another unsuspecting shopper will unknowingly pick up contaminated products.
“What happens if that person takes the chicken, throws it in the cart, and then goes back to the apples and digs through them to find the ones they want? What happens if I come and take the one they didn’t want that has chicken juice on it?’ she asks with concern.
Her idea caused a stir on the Internet, with many admitting that it was a very good point. Such handling of meat can also be dangerous to health. “I never thought about it and it ruined my day,” wrote one of the people commenting under her post, where she was interested in the opinions of other consumers.
Others said they had already developed elaborate systems to avoid the unwanted situation. “Are there still plastic bags for fruits and vegetables? If so, get one and put the chicken in it. You don’t even have to touch it with your hand.” one of the customers recommended her.
“I always start with fruits and vegetables and take a few extra bags to be prepared for a chicken situation. I use the bag to grab the chicken and then turn it inside out, keeping the chicken and juices safely enclosed.” wrote another.
Some people revealed that they carry hand sanitizer, freezer bags or even gloves specifically for supermarket shopping. “I carry disinfectant wipes and my own freezer bags with me,” one woman explained. “I recently noticed that many people wear gloves to the supermarket, and now I wonder if it is for this very reason,” added another.
This discussion highlighted the general concerns that many people still feel about hygiene and contamination due to a possible pandemic, especially in public areas such as supermarkets.
