The Children’s Day weekend will bring free children’s cinema sessions to Portimão, in an initiative aimed at families and young people. According to the portal, the Continente Portimão Shopping Center will show two animated films at no cost to visitors, on the 30th and 31st of May. The sessions take place on the second floor of the commercial space, always at 10 am. Entrance is free, although subject to room capacity, which is why the organization advises early arrival.
The first film to be shown will be “Super Mario Galaxy — The Movie”, scheduled for Saturday, May 30th. The production follows the well-known Nintendo character on a space adventure, far from the usual Mushroom Kingdom. Inspired by the video game released in 2007, the film transports Mario to different cosmic worlds, where he faces various galactic challenges. The work is based on one of the best-selling games in the series, with around 13 million copies sold worldwide.
Film adds hundreds of millions in revenue
Despite not having repeated the impact of the film released in 2023, the new production continues to stand out at the international box office. NiT reports that “Super Mario Galaxy — The Movie” grossed around 845 million euros this year. The voice cast includes names such as Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, Charlie Day and Donald Glover. The direction was in charge of Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.
The following day, Sunday, May 31, “Tom and Jerry: The Lost Compass” will be shown, a production launched in 2025 that brings together the two classic animation characters again. The story begins during a chase in a museum, when Tom and Jerry accidentally activate a magical compass that transports them to another world. Along the way, they find themselves embroiled in a conflict with unknown forces as they try to return home.
The film has already been shown in Portuguese theaters
The production grossed more than two million euros in global revenue and also played in Portuguese cinemas. The publication writes that, in Portugal, the film reached around 64 thousand euros at the box office. The Algarve shopping mall decided to include the two sessions in the Children’s Day celebration schedule, a date officially scheduled for June 1st.
To watch the films it is not necessary to purchase a ticket. Even so, access will be limited to the available capacity in the screening room. Each child can enter accompanied by a maximum of two adults. The organization recommends arriving early to guarantee a place in the free sessions.
Initiative focuses on families
Centro Comercial Continente Portimão states that this initiative is part of the strategy to create activities aimed at different generations. In the statement cited by the same source, the space says it intends to provide moments of entertainment, sharing and discovery. The same note adds that the objective is to reinforce the offer of family experiences within the mall, especially on dates associated with children.
The sessions take place at a time when many families are looking for free activities to mark Children’s Day. The combination of cinema, well-known characters and free entry should increase demand for exhibitions. The films will be shown on two consecutive days and always at the same time, allowing visitors to choose between the adventures of Super Mario or the classic conflicts between Tom and Jerry.
