President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated, this Friday (29), that he will again send to the Senate the nomination of the Union’s attorney general, Jorge Messias, to seek a seat on the Federal Supreme Court.
The statement took place during a ceremony to announce Petrobras’ investments in Sergipe. On the occasion, Lula pointed out that the defeat suffered by Messias previously in the Senate plenary was due to political reasons and said that, by resending the name, he would be fulfilling his prerogative as president.
Messias’ nomination was rejected for the STF by , on April 29. At the time, the Union’s attorney general had undergone a hearing lasting almost 8 hours at the Constitution and Justice Commission, where he received 16 votes in favor of his taking the seat left by Minister Luís Roberto Barroso.
Lula had already anticipated at the beginning of this month that he would send the AGU’s nomination for the vacancy back to the Senate, but the action could be interrupted by the Senate’s internal rules that prohibit the nomination of an authority already rejected that same year from being voted on.
