Tragedy on the highway: At least 18 victims are reported after a truck accident

A truck carrying Afghan refugees from neighboring Pakistan overturned on a highway in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday. At least 18 people did not survive the accident and 35 others were injured, writes TASR according to the report of the AP agency.

The accident happened in Laghman province on the highway connecting Kabul with Nangarhar province, the spokesman of the provincial governor there said. Among the victims are ten children, five women and three men.

The spokesman of the Taliban government movement, Zabihullah Mujahid, expressed regret over the incident and offered condolences to the families of the victims. AP reports that traffic accidents are common in Afghanistan mainly due to poor road maintenance and drivers’ disregard of traffic regulations.

The passengers were among thousands of Afghans who have returned from Pakistan in recent months. In September 2023, he launched a large-scale campaign of their mass eviction. Millions of Afghans have fled to Pakistan over the past four decades, for example after the Soviet invasion in 1979 or after the Taliban took over the government in 2021.
