A bus with young athletes crashed into a tree on the highway near Hird, the driver died and dozens of people were injured. The accident interrupted the trip to the competition.

A bus carrying young athletes, their coaches and parents veered off its lane and crashed into a tree on the highway between the Hungarian city of Pécs and Budapest on Saturday morning. The driver did not survive the accident and more than two dozen people were injured, TASR writes, according to reports from the AP agency and the telex.hu server.

The accident happened near the village of Hird around 5:20 a.m. and its cause is still unknown. There were 19 young competitors from the aerobics section of the sports school in Pécs, three coaches, six parents and a driver in the bus. The bus was taking students to the second round of the competition in Budapest.

According to the police, 23 passengers of the bus were injured and all were taken to hospitals. Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok called the accident “heartbreaking” in a post on Facebook and expressed “sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured.”
