The British crime hit Dempsey and Makepeace was an absolute cult hit in Slovakia at the turn of the 80s and 90s. The incredible chemistry between the main characters was devoured by almost every viewer. The spark in front of the cameras eventually grew into true love. Glynis Barber (70), who became famous as Harriet Makepeace, and Michael Brandon (81), who played James Dempsey, have been married for more than 30 years.
The actress spoke openly about their long-term relationship in a podcast. “We always fought, always. But it’s good. I would say that two things play in our favor. One of them is that neither of us is one to give up,” explained Glynis Barber. Even after years, she has not lost the charm that made Slovaks love her. “Marriage and living with someone is hard. When someone is around you all the time, it’s irritating sometimes. So we irritate each other, but neither of us is the type of person to walk away from a situation like that. So we stick together and I think that’s probably the most important thing,” she added, adding that the second thing mentioned is humor. “We have a similar sense of humor. Michael is very funny and I make him laugh too. I couldn’t live with someone who didn’t have a sense of humor,” she stated.
The actress is struggling with a problem in her marriage that many women have. She therefore took matters into her own hands. “I usually plan my birthday myself because Michael isn’t the best at it. I was angry with him when I was younger. Why doesn’t he surprise me? Why doesn’t he do something spectacular? But as I got older, I realized that I’m just a very organized person who can handle such things, and he doesn’t“, she revealed.
“And that doesn’t mean he doesn’t love me or care about me because he wants me to have a great birthday. But you realize: Hey, it’s just easier when I do it myself. It’s a reconciliation. And believe me, it took me a while to get the hang of it,” said the acting star openly.
