Keiko Fujimori has a small lead in the polls a week before the 2nd round in Peru

(Reuters) – ⁠Right-wing candidate Keiko ⁠Fujimori maintains a small lead over leftist ‌Roberto Sánchez a week before the second round of Peru’s presidential election, two polls showed ‌this Sunday.

Keiko Fujimori is expected to get 38% of the vote, while Sánchez is expected to secure 35% in the second round on June 7, according to the Ipsos poll conducted May 29-30 ⁠and ‌published in local newspaper Peru 21.

Support for ⁠Keiko Fujimori dropped one percentage point compared to the previous Ipsos poll, while Sánchez maintained the same level of support. The number of people who said they would not vote for any candidate or would void their ballot increased by one percentage point, reaching 27%.

“The big question over the last week is what undecided voters or those who say they plan to vote blank or invalid will do,” said Alfredo Torres, chief executive of Ipsos. ‘The logic of choosing ‌the lesser evil will end up determining who ​will be the president of Peru for the term from 2026 to 2031.’

Another poll, carried out from May 26 to 30 by ⁠Datum Internacional ​and published in ​the local newspaper El Comercio, showed Keiko Fujimori with 39.8% of the votes ⁠and Sánchez with 35.9%.

Keiko, daughter of the late former president Alberto Fujimori, is running for the fourth time and won the first round on April 12 with 17% of the vote. Sánchez, an ally of former leftist president Pedro Castillo, who is in prison, narrowly secured a place in the second round with 12% of the vote.

The Ipsos survey had a margin of error of 2.8 percentage points, while Datum Internacional had a margin of error of 2.5 percentage points.
