Iran hangs two men for torching a mosque during protests. They were convicted of violence and damage to property

Iran hanged two men on Monday for attacking a mosque during mass protests. The case once again exposes the regime’s harsh crackdowns and a wave of executions of opponents.

Iran on Monday executed two men convicted of looting and setting fire to a mosque during mass protests in the Islamic republic in December and January. TASR informs about it according to the reports of the AFP agency and the al-Jazeera station.

  • Two men were hanged in Iran on Monday for setting fire to a mosque.
  • Both men faced charges of arson, property damage and affray.
  • It is not known when the two men were apprehended and convicted.
  • Since February, Iran has carried out several executions related to recent mass protests.
  • According to Iran Human Right, 1,639 people were executed in Iran last year.

The men were executed by hanging and, according to the Mízán website, they were accused of starting a fire in the mosque, damaging public property and clashing with the security forces. AFP notes that it is unclear when the men were apprehended and convicted.

Protest-related executions

Iran has carried out multiple executions since February 28, when the US and Israeli attacks began, of people linked to the protests that broke out in late December and spread throughout the country.

Thousands of people have been killed and widespread damage caused during the mass protests, with Iranian officials accusing “terrorists” working for the US and Israel of inciting the violence. Human rights organizations based abroad say Iranian security forces deliberately fired on protesters.

Criticism of judicial processes

Iran is among the countries with the highest number of executions in the world, and the trials in such cases are often criticized by international human rights organizations for lack of transparency.

According to Iran Human Rights, 1,639 people were executed in Iran last year, the highest number since 1989.
