Finance Minister Dario Durigan said this Monday, June 1, that the federal government is concerned about the possibility of a new round of tariffs on Brazilian goods by the North American government, due to investigations based on Section 301 of that country’s Trade Law.
“Our government is concerned about possible new tariffs that could be imposed unilaterally, often not considering what we have as good arguments for the Americans,” said the minister, during an interview with the SBT News channel.
Durigan reinforced that Brazilian authorities have made an effort to provide the United States with information on the points investigated based on Section 301, including deforestation and the impacts of Pix.
He denied that the payment system harms North American companies operating in the country.
“Pix is not designed to be a product that will compete and reduce the presence of companies in the economy. On the contrary, North American companies themselves have told us, and we have taken this to the United States, that Pix has increased transactions in the country. So, companies are benefiting”, said Durigan.
According to the minister, the government’s priority is to protect Brazilian businesspeople who have relations with the USA.

He argued that these companies cannot suffer losses because of a “political reason”, without mentioning by name the opposition to the Lula government.
