Milk, cocoa and… a dash of Viagra. “Sexual Chocolates” removed from the market in the USA

Some of the “sex chocolate” brands withdrawn from the market in the US

Sellers of products with names like Boner Bears and DTF (in English, something like “horny bears” and “Ready for Sex”) voluntarily recalled their items after they detected the presence of the active substances in Viagra and Cialis.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the United States food safety regulator, regularly announces product recalls.

But recently, it issued a surprising series of warnings: according to laboratory analyzes conducted by the agency, several brands of chocolate marketed for “sexual stimulation” contain undeclared medications prescribed for erectile dysfunction.

The highlighted products, some of which are being subject to voluntary recall, are sold online under names such as Boner Bears Chocolate, DTF Sexual Chocolate, Lovion Chocolate With Ginseng for Men and Rhino Choco VIP — names that all evoke the sexual act in some way.

Some are labeled as “all natural” or claim to contain herbal ingredients, such as pau de cabinda powder, used as a libido stimulant.

The FDA advises consumers to don’t buy the chocolatesbecause they contain sildenafil e tadalafil, the active substances of Viagra and Cialis, respectively.

These substances work by relaxing blood vessels and increasing blood flow to the penis. One of the products, Pink Pussycat Aphrodisiac Chocolate, is marketed to women. The FDA has not approved Viagra or Cialis for women, the magazine notes.

“FDA approval of Viagra and Cialis is limited to use under the supervision by a qualified healthcare professionalo”, says the agency.

The agency warns that these ingredients can interact with nitrates present in some prescription medicines, such as nitroglycerin, and can lower blood pressure to dangerous levels.

Os adult men taking nitrates for heart problems are most at risk from these products, warns the FDA.

Some chocolate distributors are voluntarily recalling the products. The FDA recommends that consumers and retailers who have the recalled products should stop using or selling them and return them to the place of purchase or discard them immediately.

The agency also identified various honey products with sildenafil and tadalafil. Tampa-based Pure Vitamins and Natural Supplements is recalling single-serve plastic tubes labeled Boner Bear Honey, Red Bull Extreme and Blue Bull Extreme. The company claims that did not make honey.

Usually, food collections occur because they contain Allergenios undeclared or for causing pathogen outbreaks transmitted by food.

No adverse reactions have been reported so far to the FDA, and there is no record of consumer complaints — eventually, because the chocolates will live up to what they (subliminally) promise.
