Russia carries out new attack near the Chernobyl plant, says Zelensky

President of Ukraine says nuclear fuel depot was hit in “extremely vile” Russian attack

The President of Ukraine, (Servant of the People, center), this Sunday (June 7, 2026) that Russia hit a nuclear fuel depot near . He called the Russian attack “extremely vile”.

“Today, the Russians again attacked the special territory around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. A ‘shahed’ hit one of the buildings of the Centralized Spent Fuel Storage Facility”Zelensky wrote on X, referring to a type of long-range attack drone. “An extremely critical infrastructure facility – and an extremely vile Russian attack”he added.

Zelensky also said that “there is certainly an increase in the boldness of Russia, which has long surpassed all limits”.

The International Atomic Energy Agency was notified of the incident and that the impact caused significant damage to the facility’s fuel reception building. “Nearby buildings were also affected by the shock wave. Radiation levels at the facility remain within established limits, according to Ukraine”says the note.

A team from the agency will soon visit the facility to inspect the impact.

“Attacks on nuclear facilities are completely unacceptable”said the agency’s director general, , in a statement.

In February 2025, a Russian military drone hits the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. At the time, the dome built to isolate reactor 4 – destroyed in the 1986 disaster – was damaged and needed repairs.
