The Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) of the Senate approved this Wednesday the Proposed Amendment to the Constitution (PEC) that grants financial autonomy to the Central Bank, forwarding the text, which did not incorporate the government’s suggestion, for voting in the plenary.
The proposal, reported by senator Plínio Valério (PSDB-AM), changes the legal classification of the BC from an autarchy to a public entity of a special nature and grants budgetary, financial and administrative autonomy to the institution.
With resistance to the proposal, the government came to present an alternative text, through an amendment to the report, maintaining the BC as an autarchy and providing that its expenses could be covered by its own financial revenues. The suggestion, however, was rejected by the rapporteur.
