Motta promised to vote for the misogyny PL before the recess, says Tabata

The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicans), committed to voting on the misogyny bill in the house before the parliamentary recess in July. The information was confirmed by federal deputy Tabata Amaral (PSB), who coordinates the Working Group (GT) of the proposal.

The expectation is that, after reading the report, which takes place this Wednesday (10), voting on the GT will take place next week. “Then it’s on the agenda to vote in the plenary [da Câmara]. I spoke to President Hugo Motta yesterday and he reinforced his commitment to voting before the recess and, if possible, this month”, he told the column.

An important point is that the GT decided to replace the definition based on “hatred or aversion to women” with a more legal formulation: “disparagement or discrimination against women based on their status as women”. According to the report, this improves the nomenclature in line with other existing laws on violence against women. According to the text, the proposed definition of misogyny is: “the practice, induction or incitement of contempt or discrimination against women that promotes violence, denies their equal rights or offends their dignity due to their condition as a woman”. The proposal also proposes increased penalties.

After the approval of the text authored by Senator Ana Paula Lobato (PSB) in the Senate in March, upon its arrival in the Chamber, some parliamentarians opposed the proposal, such as Representative Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG), alleging the risk of restricting freedom of expression. Tabata stated that he is talking to several right-wing deputies and said he is “confident that we will be able to build the agreement [para aprovação].
