Seven people were injured, one of them seriously, after an explosion and a large fire last night in a gym next to a residential building in the west of Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. Another 400 people living in the complex were evacuated, local officials said.

The gym is open 24 hours a day. It is not yet known how many people were in the gym at the time of the explosion, and, according to local media, authorities say the number of injured could increase. Sniffer dogs were used this morning to look for other victims.

The explosion was reported to emergency services shortly after midnight. The fire was only controlled in the early hours of Friday.

The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined, but police, firefighters and explosives experts are involved in the investigation. Photos released by local media show huge holes in the brick structure of the sports complex.

“We are not ruling out any hypothesis at this time,” said a spokesperson for the local security agency. “The focus right now is to help those affected.”

Residents near the complex were advised to keep their windows closed due to smoke.
