Why you should put a jar of rosemary in your bedroom and what it is useful for

Can’t fall asleep and in the morning you feel tired like after a night shift? Forget expensive preparations! Rosemary on the bedside table cleans the air of bacteria, reduces stress hormones and even strengthens memory. Just a few sprigs in a glass – and your bedroom will turn into an oasis of calm.

Pleasant and undisturbed sleep is certainly not a given in today’s fast-paced, stressful times. Many of us wander in our thoughts for a long time in the evening, can’t calm our scattered mind and wake up tired in the morning, as if we didn’t even sleep. But we don’t need preparations from the pharmacy to fix it – the solution to our problems can be completely natural and fragrant.

Just a sprig of rosemary

How can we put an end to involuntarily falling asleep and waking up after several tens of minutes during the whole night? It is not complicated or expensive at all, and we can rely on the almost omnipotent nature. Placing a single glass with fresh sprigs of rosemary on the bedside table can transform the atmosphere in the bedroom into an oasis of calm and significantly improve the quality of a night’s rest. Does it seem impossible? Perhaps so, but this one, which most of us associate more with roasting meat, hides an extraordinary power affecting the human senses.

Lowers cortisol levels

The main reason why this plant works so well in the closed space of the bedroom is its chemical composition rich in volatile essential oils. During the night, rosemary slowly releases substances such as camphor, cineole or alpha-pinene into the air, which travel directly into the body through our respiratory tracts. At the same time, neurologists confirm that simply inhaling these fine natural aromatic compounds can measurably reduce the level of the stress hormone cortisol in human blood. What does this mean? Nothing less than that when we lay down to sleep next to this fragrant companion after a full day of hustle and bustle, our body receives a clear chemical signal that it can finally relax its constant vigilance.

It’s not just about sleep

In addition to calming the nervous system, the presence of rosemary by the bed brings one more great advantage, which we will appreciate right after waking up in the morning. Scientific experiments focused on human memory have confirmed that the smell of rosemary can support the brain centers responsible for storing information and improve concentration by up to several tens of percent. While the herb overnight, inhaling it in the morning will pleasantly invigorate us, rid us of the typical unpleasant “morning fog” in our head and start the brain to its maximum. We don’t have to worry about the scent waking us up at night, because its effect is very gentle and natural.

Rosemary as an air purifier

An equally important benefit of this plant in the bedroom is its ability to actively clean and disinfect the air we inhale during the night. Rosemary secretes into its surroundings so-called phytoncides, i.e. plant antibiotic substances, with which the bush protects itself from enemies in nature. These invisible particles fly freely through the air and can effectively eliminate germs in the room, limit the reproduction of bacteria and clean the air of small impurities. A purified microclimate in the bedroom relieves our bronchial tubes, makes breathing easier for people suffering from summer allergies and generally contributes to a healthier sleeping environment.

The whole plant is an even better choice

If we want to try this simple natural trick for ourselves, we don’t need to start a giant plantation right away. Just put a few fresh, slightly rubbed sprigs of rosemary in a glass of clean water and place them as close as possible to the head, ideally on the bedside table. For a long-term effect, it is of course even better to grow the whole plant in a pot in the bedroom, while we must make sure that it stands in well-permeable soil mixed with sand and has enough daylight. Regular care in the form of a mild topping will pay off richly every time we close our eyes in the evening and let ourselves be carried away by the refreshing, clean scent of the Mediterranean. So there is nothing left but to wish you a truly peaceful and good night.
