The Minister of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, Márcio Elias Rosa, spoke this Saturday (June 13, 2026) with Jamieson Greer, trade representative of the United States (USTR in English). The virtual meeting takes place due to those imposed by the White House on Brazilian products.

A new technical meeting will be held next week with representatives from the Ministry of Industry and Itamaraty, in addition to the USTR.

The US government proposed new taxes on Brazilian goods after completing a trade investigation. The reason is that Brazil adopted practices considered unfair and harmful to North American companies. In this case, the additional fee is 25%. Read the decision, in English (PDF – 915 kB).
The USTR document lists topics such as Pix, digital trade, preferential tariffs, combating corruption, intellectual property protection, access to the ethanol market and illegal deforestation as targets for the investigation. There is also another 12.5% extra tariff for “forced labor”.
Thus, additional taxes on Brazil can reach 37.5%. These are the additional tariff proposals:
- 25% – by . It is the result of a commercial investigation opened against Brazil on July 15, 2025. Read (PDF – 99 kB);
- 12,5% – stop importing products made with forced labor similar to slavery. It is the result of a global USTR investigation into the topic.
The North American government opened a public consultation on the Brazilian case. It will receive demonstrations until July 6th. In the case of the 25% rate, there will be a hearing on July 6th and another for the 12.5% rate the following day (July 7th).
The president (Republican Party) will make the decision by July 15th.
