President will defend multilateralism and criticize protectionism; agenda includes critical minerals and AI
The president (PT) leaves this Sunday (June 14, 2026) for France, where he will participate in the event, scheduled from Monday (June 15) to Wednesday (June 17). That of the President of the United States, (Republican), opens the possibility of a conversation between the 2, although there is no bilateral meeting scheduled nor formal request from either government.
Members of Palácio do Planalto consider that a formal meeting would have little practical effect at this time. Trade negotiations between Brazil and the United States continue through technical channels, and the presidents met in May, at the White House. The Brazilian government, however, admits informal contact during some of the summit activities.
Lula should avoid direct references to Trump and Brazilian products. The orientation is to adopt a diplomatic tone and present the country’s position in a broader way, with multilateral rules for trade and criticism of protectionist measures. Planalto assesses that a public confrontation would increase tensions during negotiations between the 2 countries.
On the G7 agenda, the president will participate in debates on international partnerships, global development and balanced economic growth. Lula must demand that rich countries continue to finance initiatives aimed at combating poverty and developing emerging economies.
Another theme will be the exploration of critical minerals, including . Brazil will defend greater appreciation of these resources in the countries where they are extracted. The position is associated by the government with the defense of national sovereignty.
This will be Lula’s 10th participation in a G7 summit as a guest. Brazil is not part of the group and, for this reason, will be left out of the negotiation of the final documents. The delegation will be able to endorse the texts of interest after approval by the members.
On Tuesday (June 16), Lula will participate in the session on international partnerships. On Wednesday (June 17), the program includes a debate on balanced economic growth, a lunch with representatives from the technology sector on artificial intelligence and possible bilateral meetings.
