Lebanon’s Civil Defense reported this Sunday (14) that three people died after Israeli bombings in the south of Beirut, hours after Israel announced attacks in the suburbs of the capital, considered a stronghold of the pro-Iran Hezbollah movement.
In a statement, the agency states that “the bodies of three martyrs were removed from the rubble and six injured people were taken to hospital after the bombing”, which took place in the Ghobeiry region.
Earlier, Israel announced attacks on the southern outskirts of Beirut for the second time in a week, as well as in the south of the country, after saying that three drones launched from Lebanon had reached its territory.
The Army carried out attacks “in the neighborhood of Dahiyeh, in Beirut (…) in response to Hezbollah firing on Israeli territory”, declared Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a joint statement with Defense Minister Israel Katz.
“Israel will not tolerate any attack against its territory,” the note adds.
The army said it carried out “precision strikes” against a Hezbollah installation south of Beirut.
The official Lebanese NNA agency also reported shelling in Ghobeiry. An AFP correspondent heard explosions coming from the area.
Shortly before, three drones allegedly launched by Hezbollah from Lebanon reached northern Israel, without causing any casualties, according to the Israeli Army.
The attacks could put at risk the signing of an agreement to end the war in the Middle East, which US President Donald Trump had announced for Sunday.
Iran had already warned Israel that attacking the Lebanese capital constituted a red line, an argument it used to justify missile launches against the Hebrew state a week ago.
Israel and Hezbollah have been at war since March 2, when the Shiite movement launched projectiles against the Hebrew state in solidarity with its sponsor, Iran, attacked two days earlier by the United States and the Israeli army.
Since mid-April, a truce between the two parties has, in theory, been in force, but hostilities have continued.
Israel, which attacked hundreds of Hezbollah targets, occupies a part of southern Lebanon and, according to statements from residents and AFP photographs, destroyed several locations in the region.
Iran demands that the agreement being negotiated with the United States to end the war that began on February 28 includes Lebanon.
