Russian President Vladimir Putin called his American counterpart Donald Trump on Sunday on his 80th birthday, and they talked about the wars in Ukraine and Iran, as well as the upcoming visit of Washington’s envoys to Russia, the Kremlin said.
“The conversation focused on the situation regarding the memorandum of understanding being drawn up between the United States and Iran. Donald Trump said that the agreement is close,” said Yuri Ushakov, Kremlin advisor.
Ushakov also stated that “it was agreed that the special representatives of the President of the United States, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who are currently very involved in Iranian affairs, will soon return to Russia.”
Since returning to office at the beginning of last year, Trump has been putting pressure on Moscow and Kiev to negotiate an end to the conflict. However, months of talks failed to bring the parties closer to an agreement to end the fighting, which was triggered by the Russian invasion more than four years ago.
Negotiations, which were already stagnant, have been put on the back burner since the end of February, when the American-Israeli offensive against Iran began.
