Horror on the rails in eastern Slovakia: A train tore off a man’s leg! Power, what the train driver did

On Monday, June 15, a terrible accident occurred in the village of Helcmanovce in the district of Gelnica in the early hours of the morning. A man was hit by a train on the railway line. The accident was reported to the rescue services shortly after half past four in the morning, reports the website.

Firefighters from Gelnice intervened on the spot and helped the rescuers. The man suffered serious injuries in the accident, as a result of which he lost his lower limb. Firefighters helped the injured man into the emergency medical service vehicle. There were also police officers at the scene of the accident who were checking the surroundings to see if there was another person nearby.

The exact circumstances of the terrible accident are not yet known. “The driver immediately applied rapid braking and an audible warning signal after spotting the person, while he was no longer able to prevent a collision with the person. He immediately got off the train and provided first aid to the injured person and called the emergency services to the scene,” explained regional police spokeswoman Jana Illésová.

The train driver submitted to a breath test on the spot to determine the presence of alcohol in his breath with a negative result. The injured man was taken to the hospital in Krompachy.
