The lighting is dimmed, the furnishings are simple, and there is no pressure on the tear or sensation gland. And yet when you enter the Sala Llullaillaco in the Museo de Arqueología de Alta Montaña (MAAM) in Salta, Argentina, you feel a chill run down your spine. One of three child mummies is shown alternately in specially constructed cryopreservation capsules that simulate the icy temperatures of the Andes. The museum strives for a respectful presentation – a mixture of memorial and knowledge space.
