During the , between 35,000 and 40,000 international brigade members, mostly men, but also women, voluntarily went to Spain to fight. The conflict is considered “the last war for ideals, the last great cause, and the prelude to the Second World War that many volunteers predicted”, according to Lourdes Prades Artigas, director of the CRAI Library of the Pavilion of the Republic of the University of Barcelona, and Ramon Naya Ortega, archivist of the same library, curators of the exhibition Live, live and survive: International Brigades and multilingualism, which can be seen at the Castle of Montjuïc.
