Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said that Tehran and Oman had “largely” reached an agreement on the management mechanisms for the Strait of Hormuz, amid negotiations with the United States. According to him, the management of the strategic passage will be the shared responsibility of both countries, and Iran will receive financial compensation for services provided in the strait.
Baghaei also reiterated that Iran’s defense program will not be part of any negotiations. “Our defense capabilities will not be discussed in any process,” he declared.
Regarding the nuclear issue, the spokesman said that Iran will not accept sending enriched material out of the country. According to him, the only alternative considered acceptable is to reduce the level of enrichment within Iranian territory itself.
The Iranian representative once again defended the end of restrictions on the energy sector. According to Baghaei, sanctions on Iranian oil should be lifted, allowing the country to sell its production without obstacles related to transportation, insurance or receipt of revenue.
Regarding negotiations with Washington, he warned that Tehran will respond in kind if the United States delays implementing the commitments made. “If the Americans begin to delay the execution of their obligations, we will do the same,” he said.
Baghaei also accused Israel of trying to impede diplomatic progress and said it was up to the US to ensure that the country complies with the commitments made by Washington in the memorandum of understanding. According to him, Iran’s deterrent capacity and the principle of reciprocity are the main guarantees for the implementation of the agreement.
