Former Brazilian national team coach Carlos Alberto Parreira, 83, is admitted to the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) at Hospital Samaritano Barra, in the southwest zone of Rio de Janeiro.
Parreira has lung inflammation and is breathing with the help of equipment, according to the hospital. He is stable and is not expected to be discharged to the fourth. The information about Parreira’s hospitalization was released this Monday (18) by the health unit.
The note released by the Samaritano hospital states that the former coach’s family “appreciates the expressions of affection”. In a press conference on Monday, defender Danilo, from the Seleção, expressed support for the family. Zinho, former four-time champion midfielder with Parreira in 1994, was among the journalists at the press conference and also wished support.
“The situation is not the best, but I believe it. The fans are in this sense. Vanessa, who is his daughter, told me that he really had a complication in the lung. He is hospitalized and had to be intubated. He is stable”, said the former midfielder to the website 365Score.
In 2024, Parreira underwent chemotherapy to treat Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Commander of Brazil’s campaign for the fourth World Cup in 1994, Parreira participated via video in Carlo Ancelotti’s presentation at the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation), last year. He was in the United States and welcomed the arrival of the Italian, on recording.
Parreira was a physical trainer for the tri team, led by Zagallo in 1970, and coach of the tetra, in 1994. The duo returned to the national team in 2006 — Parreira as coach and Zagallo as an assistant.
Parreira was also on the technical committee of the 2014 World Cup, in which Luiz Felipe Scolari was the coach.
In addition to the four World Cups in which he accompanied Brazil, he coached Kuwait in 1982, the United Arab Emirates in 1990, Saudi Arabia in 1998 and South Africa in 2010.
