Robert Fico had a brief meeting with Péter Magyar before the summit in Brussels

The head of the Slovak government called Robert Fico’s meeting with the new Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar a good start. A common position in the EU should be key.

The Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic Robert Fico met the new Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar for the first time on Thursday before the European Council meeting in Brussels. According to Fico, it was a short meeting, which he described as a good start to mutual cooperation, informs the TASR special reporter.

The two leaders will next hold talks at the upcoming summit of the Prime Ministers of the Vyšehrad Four (V4), which will take place next Tuesday in Budapest.

“I very much welcome that both prime ministers are interested in the continuation of this format and we realize how important it is, because if we coordinate before the meetings of the European Council, we have great strength,” stated the head of the Slovak government.

The meeting was extraordinary

After the bilateral meeting, Fico and Magyar met with the other leaders of the V4 states – Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. It was the first coordination meeting of V4 prime ministers in several years.

The Tisza party won the parliamentary elections in Hungary in April, and its leader Peter Magyar replaced Viktor Orbán as prime minister after 16 years. On Thursday, he will attend his first meeting of the European Council in Brussels.
