Pentagon estimates the cost of the war against Iran at US$80 billion, says newspaper

It estimates that it will need US$80 billion to cover expenses related to the war against Iran and other military expenses, according to information published on Thursday (June 18, 2026). The amount would have been presented by Deputy Secretary of Defense, Stephen Feinberg, to US congressmen.

The figure is higher than the projection released by the agency, when the agency reported that the additional costs would be US$25 billion.

According to the newspaper, parliamentarians have asked the US government for more details about the expenses incurred during the conflict, which ended this week after almost 4 months. There are also questions about the use of weapons and ammunition used in military operations.

According to the publication, members of the Pentagon had already warned that the resources available for military activities were close to the limit and that it would be necessary to approve emergency funds to maintain certain operations. The statement mentioned the possibility of reducing training and other activities of the Armed Forces.

Defense sector spending has increased in recent months due to different operations conducted by the United States, including actions related to Venezuela and operations against drug trafficking in the Pacific Ocean.

O Wall Street Journal further informed that the government may forward a supplementary request for resources to Congress in the coming days. The Pentagon’s annual budget for 2026 is $1 trillion. Any additional requests must be reviewed by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget before being sent to lawmakers.

If the proposal is formalized, some congressmen have already indicated that they may vote against the release of resources.
