The federal government reported, this Friday (19), that it blocked around 50,000 illegal betting sites and also identified 37 fintechs involved in irregular transactions carried out by the platforms.
The data was released during the presentation of new measures to restrict the operation of unauthorized bets in the Brazilian market.
Also this week, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) signed a decree that allows the government to block resources from companies that manage illegal online betting platforms, with the funds subsequently directed towards public security actions.
A decree from the Ministry of Finance was also signed on Thursday (18), which defines that banks and fintechs are jointly responsible for taxes not collected by these companies if they allow transactions even after communication from the government.
Both announcements took place on social media, before the Minister of Finance, Dario Durigan, held a press conference to talk about the topic.
According to the ministry, Brazil received more than 400 requests for authorization to operate bets in the country, of which more than 200 were rejected and only 85 companies were authorized to operate.
The Finance Prizes and Bets Secretariat, Daniele Cardoso, highlighted that, despite the sector having been strengthened with today’s decree, the country effectively structured new legislation in 2023 and that, since then, it has been working to combat irregular actions by platforms.
The government also begins to remove advertising and propaganda related to illegal platforms. Ministry data confirms that more than 800 profiles have already been removed.
The new strategy seeks to combine the supervision of digital platforms, the dissemination of information on social networks and regulatory entities to stifle irregular operations, and no longer just take websites offline.
