IMPASSE OVER Ceasefire

Mediation efforts attempt to halt hostilities. On Friday (June 19), the Israeli ambassador to Washington, Yechiel Leiter, stated that Israel is committed to an immediate ceasefire if Hezbollah ceases its attacks.

However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that the army hit 150 militant group targets on Friday and promised to keep Israeli forces in southern Lebanon until any threat to Israel is eliminated.

In response, Hezbollah declared acceptance of a ceasefire, but blamed Israel for successive violations.

Hezbollah conditions the end of its offensives on the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Lebanon, a demand supported by Iran.

A new round of negotiations between the Lebanese government and Israel, with American support, is scheduled to take place in Washington next week.
