UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has been facing a dilemma after almost two years in office: resign or face a possible challenge from his Labor Party rival, Andy Burnham, the current mayor of Greater Manchester. This Sunday (21), one day before a possible announcement of Starmer’s resignation, US President Donald Trump stated that the British Prime Minister “severely failed” on two major issues: immigration and energy.
“Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He has failed badly on two very important issues – immigration and energy (opening North Sea oil!). I wish him all the best,” Trump posted on his network Truth Social earlier.
Resignation this Monday
Expectations have grown that Starmer will announce a timetable for his resignation this Monday (22). On this date, his possible successor, Burnham, will be sworn in as an MP in the House of Commons after winning a special election last week.
UK Business Secretary Peter Kyle said this Sunday in an interview with BBC that Starmer is “taking time to reflect on the political realities, challenges and opportunities he finds himself in”.
If Starmer resigns, he will be the sixth prime minister to step down in the last 10 years, a turnover rate considered high by UK historical standards.
