Lidl ‘accelerates’ and opens two more stores in Portugal with their debut in this municipality: discover the new locations

Soon in Portugal? In this country Lidl customers can reserve products before they reach stores

The expansion of large supermarket chains, such as Lidl, continues to bring new commercial spaces to different regions of the country, with investments that seek to reinforce the local offer, create jobs and introduce stores adapted to current energy efficiency requirements.

Lidl opened two new stores in Portugal on June 18th and 19th this year. The first space opened in Carvalhal, in the municipality of Grândola, and the second in Sertã, where the chain began to be present for the first time.

The two projects represent a joint investment of almost 15 million euros and created more than 40 jobs, according to .

The new supermarkets have sales areas between 1,200 and 1,300 square meters, with spacious and bright spaces. They also have quick payment boxes prepared for customers with carts or baskets, seeking to reduce waiting time during purchases.

The energy component was also integrated into both projects. The stores operate with full LED lighting, have photovoltaic panels intended for self-consumption and include fast charging stations for electric vehicles in their parking lots, according to the official statement from Lidl Portugal.

Despite sharing the same commercial concept, the spaces were adapted to the characteristics of the locations where they are located. The Carvalhal store focuses on an architecture inspired by the region, while the Sertã unit reinforces areas such as fresh products, bakery and customer support services.

Investment of 8.3 million in Carvalhal

The Carvalhal store was the result of an investment of 8.3 million euros and is integrated into a new subdivision promoted by Herdade da Comporta. The building stands out for its architecture inspired by the region’s traditional style, seeking to maintain a visual connection with the surrounding landscape.

During the development of the project, native species were protected and integrated, including cork oaks and stone pines. The car park has 130 spaces, including spaces for motorhomes.

With this opening, the municipality of Grândola now has two Lidl stores, which employ more than 40 workers in total. The new supermarket is located on EN261-1, in Carvalhal.

Lidl arrives in Sertã for the first time

In Sertã, investment reached 6.5 million euros and created more than 20 direct jobs. This is the chain’s first store in the municipality, in the district of Castelo Branco.

The space includes an area dedicated to fresh products and a self-service bakery and confectionery area, equipped with a bread cutting machine. The parking lot has 118 spaces, bicycle racks and lockers for picking up orders.

According to Lidl, workers at the two new units have permanent contracts from day one, access to ongoing training, health insurance and financial, legal and psychological counseling services.

Surplus food will be delivered to local institutions

The two stores will also regularly donate surplus food to private charities. In Carvalhal, the goods will be delivered to the Carvalhal Social Center, while in Sertã the support will be directed to the Nossa Senhora da Confiança Social Center.

The Carvalhal store is located at EN261-1, 7570-779 Carvalhal. The new Sertânia space is on Rua dos Malmequeres, Lot 1. Both are open daily between 8 am and 9 pm.

Lidl has been present in Portugal since 1995 and currently has more than 290 stores on the mainland. The network maintains the goal of reaching 300 commercial spaces in the country by 2027.
