Thirteen people died and 66 were injured in Sunday’s explosion in the industrial zone of Ras Lafán in the north of Qatar. The victims are workers from India and Pakistan. The injured citizens of Qatar and various African countries are out of danger, the Qatari Ministry of Energy said on Monday afternoon, according to which it was one of the most tragic accidents in the country’s energy sector. TASR informs about it with reference to AFP and AP agencies.
The explosion occurred during the start-up of the facility, which supplies gas to local businesses, power plants and desalination plants. The Home Office described the incident as a “technical fault” that was not caused by external factors.
The explosion was felt in the metropolis
The explosion was also felt in the Qatari metropolis of Doha, approximately 20 kilometers away. The fire was brought under control during the night. Qatari authorities said the accident did not affect exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) or domestic energy supplies and had no environmental consequences.
Ras Lafán is one of the largest LNG production centers. Already on March 18, it suffered extensive damage from an Iranian attack during the war with the US and Israel, which temporarily reduced Qatar’s export capacity by 17 percent. It will take three to five years to repair the damage from this attack.
