JD Vance says talks created ‘good basis’ for definitive Iran deal

United States Vice President JD Vance said on Monday (22) that negotiations with Iran created a “good basis for a successful final agreement.” to end the war definitively. Vance cited advances on multiple fronts, such as the creation of “mechanisms” for maintaining maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and ending the conflict between Israel and the Hezbollah group in Lebanon. He left Switzerland on Monday, while technical teams remained in talks with Iranian representatives.

The interim agreement to end fighting in Iran, signed last week, establishes a 60-day deadline for negotiations on central issues, including the future of Tehran’s nuclear program.

The Iranian delegation’s main negotiator, the Speaker of Iran’s Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, reiterated that the Strait of Hormuz will be administered by Iran in accordance with international laws. “We hope to be able to activate the strait again, in terms of passage, and bring prosperity back to the regional and global economy,” Ghalibaf said.

The United States Treasury Department issued, on Monday, a 60-day license that lifts sanctions on Iranian oil, as part of the interim agreement.

Meanwhile, oil tanker traffic continued to increase in the Strait of Hormuz. According to data and analytics company Kpler, there were 71 confirmed crossings over the weekend. Before the war, 100 to 130 vessels crossed the strait per day.
