The President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, participated in the radiotherapy equipment delivery ceremony this afternoon (23), at Santa Marcelina Hospital, in the east zone of São Paulo.
“What is happening today is a dream that we have cherished for a long time, that working people would have access to the things that everyone else has. The machine that will perform radiotherapy here in the east zone is more modern than the one I used for my 15 sessions in Brasília, which I just finished”, said Lula, in his speech.
O president also spoke about service measures aimed at access to the populationthrough Aqui Tem Mais Especialistas, with local service in vans and trailers, taking specialists and free dental care close to where people live and work. “What we really want to do is give the Brazilian people the respect they should have”, he added.
O The device delivered today, a linear accelerator, is among the most modern options for treating cancer patients. It is part of a package of 105 devices contracted over the last 3 years and distributed to all states.
At Hospital Santa Marcelina, the estimate is an increase of 30% in attendances with the arrival of this equipment, and it operates with three accelerators, older models. The expectation is also to reduce the time to start treatment, from 45 to 10 days.
The institution also signed new agreements with the Ministry of Health and will receive R$ 166.7 million, mainly aimed at serving patients undergoing cancer treatment. On that occasion, HSM also received certification as a Level 1 Teaching Hospital, recognizing its prominent role in research and professional training.
The event also featured two simultaneous deliveries of accelerators, in the cities of Fortaleza (CE) and Sinop (MT), under similar conditions, in addition to the signing of the purchase of 20 CT scanners for SUS hospitals.
Hospital Santo Antônio, in Sinop (MT), will begin to act as part of the national radiotherapy decentralization strategy, aimed at reducing gaps in care, reducing the movement of patients to large centers and expanding access to treatments. Located in the northern region of the state, it has stood out as a regional health hub, with emphasis on recent care for chief Raoni.
The equipment that will go to Fortaleza (CE) will be destined for the Ceará Cancer Institute (ICC) – Hospital Haroldo Juaçaba, which already works in the diagnosis, treatment and palliative care of cancer as a reference for the entire state.
Since 2023, 155 linear accelerators have been contracted, with 70 pieces of equipment expected to be delivered by 2026, of which 44 have already been inaugurated.
