The Ministry of Education is preparing a historic drop in the ratio of students per classroom, one of the main demands of teachers in Spain, in all educational networks, public, subsidized and private. This Wednesday, the Government put on the negotiating table with the unions a document that proposes reducing the maximum number of students in the first cycle of Early Childhood Education, 0-3, to less than half. But they also propose a significant decrease in the second cycle of Early Childhood (classes from 3 to 6 years old), which would remain at 20 students per classroom, instead of 25. And in the Baccalaureate, which will now be 30, instead of 35.
The maximum number of children per class in the proposal that the Ministry of Education has put forward to the unions is set as follows. In the 0-year-old class, it goes from the current 8 students to a maximum of 4. In the 1-year-old classroom, it goes from 13 students to a maximum of 6. And in the 2-year-old class, it goes from a maximum of 20 children to only 8.
This modification would be applied progressively starting with the first level of each cycle starting with the 2027-2028 academic year.
The changes will be processed by royal decree, so it will not be necessary for the Government to gather a parliamentary majority to lower the ratios to 22 students in Primary (instead of a maximum of 25 as there is now) and to 25 in ESO (instead of the current 30). Last week, the bill surpassed the amendments to the entirety presented by Junts and the PNV, which would have ruined the attempt to lower the ratios.
