German car company Mubea in Kežmark at its grand opening in 2020, it promised jobs for five hundred people, but will fire all 120 current employees by the end of this year. The reason for the drastic step is supposed to be weak product sales, he informs.
The company reported mass layoffs to the Kežmar Labor Office on June 19, 2026. The termination of operations and the departure of employees will take place gradually in several waves, with the first dismissals starting already in July. According to the authorities, the reason behind the collapse of the Kežmar operation is the persistent low interest in the manufactured automotive components.
The decision of the management surprised the employees. “We were surprised, because the parent company has good numbers in the world. The mood at work is miserable,” admitted one of the workers on condition of anonymity. The end of the factory will have serious consequences for the locals. In the district of Kežmarok, as well as in neighboring Stara Ľubovna, there is a minimum of vacancies.
Among the last to leave the plant are the oldest employees, for whom the search for a new job on the labor market will be the most difficult. Although the company offered the workers an alternative, it means moving to other branches outside of Slovakia for work. Mubea’s other domestic plant in Veľká Ida near Košice is not mentioned in this context.
