Order reflects concern for cutting-edge AI; competitor Anthropic suspended its most sophisticated model
The Donald Trump (Republican Party) administration has asked OpenAI to adopt a staggered rollout of its next advanced artificial intelligence model, GPT-5.6. The request was made almost two weeks after rival Anthropic suspend its most advanced products from the market under pressure from the North American government. The information is from the news agency .
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman informed employees this Thursday (June 25, 2026) that the United States government requested that the company make GPT-5.6 initially available to a restricted list of trusted partners before expanding access.
At the same meeting, Altman signaled that the North American government began to show greater concern about the capabilities of the most advanced artificial intelligence models. The CEO emphasized that employees need to collaborate with any guidance that authorities may provide regarding safety and restrictions on upcoming models, even if the company disagrees with these guidelines.
CASO ANTHROPIC
In early June 2026, Anthropic gained global access to its 2 most advanced AI products, Mythos 5 and Fable 5, after the US government ordered the company to restrict the use of these models by foreign citizens, both inside and outside the United States. The justification given was concern for national security.
Anthropic believes the order was issued after the government discovered it was possible to carry out a jailbreak in Fable 5, that is, bypassing the model’s security protections. Fable 5 is a version of Mythos that the company has blocked from performing cybersecurity-related tasks.
“We disagree that the discovery of a limited possibility of jailbreaking should be a reason to withdraw from circulation a commercial model used by hundreds of millions of people”disse a Anthropic.
