The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) raised the warnings against high temperatures in some districts to level three on Friday afternoon. He informed about it on his website. The third level of warnings will come into force at noon in the districts of Skalica, Senica, Nové Zámky and Komárno.

  • The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute declared the third degree of heat warning.
  • In the districts of Skalica, Senica, Nové Zámky and Komárno there is a threat of thirty-eight degree heat.
  • Several districts of western and southern Slovakia have valid second-level warnings.
  • Children, seniors, pregnant women and the chronically ill are among the most at risk.
  • It is necessary to drink regularly, limit physical activity and avoid the sun.

In these places, the temperature can rise to 38 degrees Celsius. “High temperature is a potential danger to human health, physical activities and fire formation. The mentioned air temperature is rare at the given time of year and area, and the probability of health damage due to excessive strain on the body in some people is high“, warned the institute.

Second-level warnings are also in effect in the entire Bratislava Region and in most of the districts of Banskobystrické, Trenčianske, Nitra and Trnava Region, as well as in the districts of Michalovce, Rožňava, Sobrance and Trebišov. The first level of warnings is declared in the other districts, except for some places in the north of Slovakia, where the warnings do not apply.

The Office of Public Health (ÚVZ) of the Slovak Republic warns in connection with temperatures that risk groups of the population include children, the elderly, pregnant women or chronically ill people, especially people with cardiovascular, respiratory or mental diseases or who are overweight. “High outside temperatures can cause overheating of the body and health complications – increase in body temperature, malaise, drowsiness, headaches, dizziness, nausea or vomiting. An extreme case is serious collapse conditions, which can lead under certain conditions to possible deaths of people, especially in risk groups“, warns ÚVZ.

According to him, it is an important principle strict adherence to a regular drinking regimen, even if thirst does not appear. Physical activity should also be limited, stay out of direct sunlight and stay outside to a minimum. Paramedics recommend during hot weather lighter diet, proper clothing including head coverings and sunglasses and use of protective creams. Children and pets must not be left in direct sunlight or in parked cars. If people experience severe weakness, dizziness, nausea or collapse, they should seek help.
