World Cup: Muslera admits mistakes for Uruguay and apologizes – 06/27/2026 – Sport

Uruguayan goalkeeper Fernando Muslera said this Friday (26), upon leaving the stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico, that he recognized that he had not had a good World Cup, and apologized to his teammates and Uruguayans as a whole.

“I never imagined I would be suffering so much for this sport, especially with all the work I did, the way I prepared myself,” he told sports newspaper Ovación.

The Uruguayan team was eliminated from the World Cup after a 1-0 defeat to Spain. Muslera missed Álex Baena’s goal at the end of the first half.

“This sport has this, this position has this, sometimes it gives you a lot and sometimes it takes away from you,” said the Uruguayan goalkeeper.

Muslera arrived at the World Cup in North America about to turn 40. His birthday was the day after his debut, in Miami, in the 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia. Against Cape Verde, Muslera conceded two goals.

In the match against Spain, the goalkeeper was substituted at half-time and did not return for the second half.

Coach Marcelo Bielsa stated that it was Muslera himself who decided not to return for the final stage. With the elimination in the group stage, the Uruguayan team repeats the result of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
