A powerful explosion occurred in the Shirik district in the south, according to NourNews and Iran’s state-run IRIB broadcaster, with authorities not yet providing an official explanation for the cause of the incident.
The incident comes at a time of heightened tension, just hours after US President Donald Trump’s statements left open the possibility of an American response to recent developments surrounding Iran and shipping in the Straits of Hormuz.
Unknown explosion in a critical area of southern Iran
The first reports from Iranian media are of an explosion with no yet determined origin or target, in the coastal zone of Shirik, near critical Persian Gulf sea routes. There are no reports of casualties or damage so far.
The incident comes in an environment of heightened military and diplomatic mobility, with Tehran under pressure over developments in maritime security.
Trump’s statement and message for a possible response
Donald Trump, in his statements to reporters, hinted that the US is considering a response to the recent attack on a merchant ship. “If I react, you will know,” he said, adding that he “didn’t like the fact that they attacked” and that “they shouldn’t have done that.”
The US president earlier accused Iran of violating a ceasefire deal, claiming that at least four suicide drones were launched against ships moving through the Strait of Hormuz, with US forces shooting down three.
According to a post by Donald Trump on Truth Social, one of the drones reportedly hit the deck of a large cargo ship, causing damage without interrupting its course, while the rest were shot down. He described the incident as a “violation of the ceasefire agreement”.
The Straits of Hormuz remain a critical hub for international shipping, and any tension in the region directly affects energy flows and global trade.
Shipping reports and conflicting estimates
Taiwan-based Evergreen Marine said its Singapore-flagged vessel Ever Lovely was struck off the coast of Oman by an “unknown object” while following a route indicated by Britain’s maritime safety agency UKMTO.
None of the crew were injured and the ship continued its journey. However, two US officials, according to Reuters, attribute the blow to an Iranian attack, without Tehran confirming such accusations.
New data in regional security
The Iranian-run Persian Gulf Straits Authority warned that the use of unauthorized routes is “the responsibility of the shipowner, operator and master”, shifting some of the responsibility for shipping incidents to the agencies involved.
The set of developments forms a backdrop of heightened uncertainty, with the explosion in Shirik adding to a chain of events that are intensifying pressure on the already fragile balance between Washington and Tehran.
