Entering an exclusive lane on Via Verde by mistake without having an active identifier can happen due to distraction, a broken device or driving a vehicle without an associated contract. Although the situation causes immediate concern, the ticket does not, in and of itself, mean that you will receive a ticket immediately. Even so, the toll remains unpaid and must be regularized within the stipulated deadlines.
According to , a website specializing in automotive matters, when a vehicle passes on a Via Verde road without an identifier, the system registers the license plate number and associates this passage with the car. From there, the entity responsible for the infrastructure can begin the process of collecting the amount owed. In other words, even without a device, the passage is not “invisible” and can be identified later.
How to regularize the missing toll
The simplest way to resolve the situation is to consult the Toll Payment portal. This service allows you to check whether there is any amount due associated with the vehicle’s license plate and make the respective payment. As a general rule, the information does not appear immediately at the time of passage, as processing can take between 24 and 48 hours.
Therefore, if you passed on a Via Verde road without an identifier, the most prudent thing to do is to check the portal in the following days. If the debt is not yet available, you may want to check back later. The immediate absence of outstanding amounts does not necessarily mean that there is no toll to be paid.
There are, however, exceptions. According to Razão Automóvel, if the crossing occurred on a highway granted by Ascendi or Via Livre, payment is not made through the Toll Payment portal. In the old SCUT, regularization can be done through CTT, within a period of up to 15 days.
What happens if you don’t pay
The problem arises when the toll is not paid within the legal deadline. In these cases, administrative costs and, subsequently, coercive collection mechanisms may be added to the initial value. A missed ticket can therefore result in a higher charge.
In addition to the toll and administrative costs, an infringement case may be opened. The fine corresponds to at least five times the amount of the outstanding toll, and can never be less than 25 euros, in accordance with Law no. 27/2023, of 4 July.
Therefore, anyone who passes through Via Verde without identification should act quickly. Checking the license plate through the appropriate channels, waiting for the normal processing time and paying as soon as the amount becomes available is the best way to avoid additional costs and prevent the situation from escalating to a fine.
